Psychosoma (from 'psychosomatic', adj.) [-/ˌsʌɪkə(ʊ)səˈmatɪk/]:
"(of a physical illness or other condition) caused or aggravated by a mental factor such as internal conflict or stress."

Psychosoma is a deeply abstracted and experimental body of work, brought into existence as a personal mode of psychosomatic exorcism. The resulting images attempt to give form to the perceptual aberrations I had been experiencing during ongoing therapeutic EMDR (eye movement desensitisation reprocessing), a treatment for PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).

The use of colour flash gels, long exposures and gestural camera motions seek to visually interpret the 'sense of feeling' I experienced during this time in and out of reprocessing therapy. All of the work's locations were rural, deep in forests or overlooking the sea. The body of work was created in an ongoing state of uncertainty, seeking to apply visual elements to the non-visual nature of psychosomatic sensation.

Psychosoma traces an arc of psychosomatic states, from psychosis, through to medicated dissociation, ending in a naturalised, ambient calm.
